Goodbye Leba!

This past week was not a good week for Leba. I really thought Thursday we were going to have to put her to sleep as she could not even stand up and one day I even had to spoon feed her because she couldn't bend down to eat. It was really sad, but Kevin didn't want to let her go. For about the last month I have been telling Kevin she didn't have much more time with us. So this weekend when we were preparing for our family trip to Three Falls  Cove, we decided to kennel Leba at the vets. That way we knew she would be safe and well taken care of. This morning we got up to go walk at the mall, then had breakfast, and then on to the vets to pick up Leba. When we got there the vet called us into the exam room and said, "Leba has a very poor quality of life. Since she was here for four days and I was able to observe her, I see that she has advanced dementia. With her blindness, diabetes, seizures and other ailments, I really think it is time to let her go." We were kind of surprised that it was to be this morning, but had been expecting it. Kevin said, "Okay, let's go ahead and do it." They went and got Leba out of the kennel and gave her to Kevin. She immediately recognized his smell and started licking his face. He carried her into the exam room and the doctor shaved some fur from her front paw and gave her the injection. She just peacefully drifted off. It was really sad for us, but I know she is not hurting any more. Kevin has beat himself up all day saying, "I shouldn't have given up on her. Maybe she was all right." I keep telling him it was the right thing to do, but it's just hard to let go of someone or something you really love. So goodbye our sweet doggy. You were a good, loyal friend.

I am so sorry! That really makes me sad, but I know it was best for Leeba. I will miss her when we go up there. She was a good and loyal companion. I know that day is coming soon for us too with Hilliary since she is 16 years old and also blind. I know how sad you are. Love, Mom

I am so sorry - Leba was a sweet & lovable dog. These dogs become our little family members that tug at our hearts! I had no clue until I got Kiki. Too bad we didn't have a Harrigan's. Tell Kevin I will make him a Pina Coloda tonight.

Oh, Linda and Kevin, I'm so sorry. Just reading your post has made me so sad for you. I'm so thankful that you had her with you for so many years. She loved you so much, and you were the best parents. You will miss her terribly, I know. I'm glad she is no longer suffering, but it still doesn't make it easy to say goodbye. I love you both!
